Chowk(khari):
The word 'rangoli' has been derived from the words 'rang' and 'aavalli' which refers to a lots of colours. Rangoli designs and colours vary between different regions but they all follow some basic patterns.Rangoli is a traditional Indian art of decorating the entrance of a house. In Hindu Dharma, rangoli is drawn during every festival, auspicious occasion, religious rituals, etc . A rangoli is a design , drawn on the floor.
The traditional method of drawing it is using
rangoli powder. It is the oldest form of Rangoli in India, which is still made by old woman on the occasions .It is the traditional type of rangoli. It is made by flour of wheat ,vermilion and turmeric. Patterns through khari , is made over the pilli(yellow in color). This pilli and khari are the traditional names which are used from since past.
The trade of making rangoli with khari and pilli are reduced because the youngsters are anware of this trend . Making rangoli using chowk is considered very auspicious and it is also said that it pleases god and goddess. In villages still women are believe to make rangoli of this khari and pilli on the occassions.
Diwali is celebrated, primarily to herald the coming of the goddess Lakshmi. Prayers are offered to her, asking for her blessings in the form of wealth. As such, a rangoli design is created at the entrance of the house, not only to welcome the guests that visit, but also the goddess herself.
Chowk rangoli is mainly designed as follows :
firstly women made floor yellow using the pilli , above that they make patterns , to welcome god and godess , by khari we can make many patterns of rangoli. Now this type of rangoli are nowdays replaced by flower petals , colors , glasses ,etc. Rangoli is a tradition that is followed all over India. Rangoli is also known as alpana, aripoma, or kolam. It is an ancient art, practiced by almost all households.
